Toronto Star Referrer

Instead of condemning a system, how about teaching?

Re Steven Del Duca’s foolish promise to reform our elections — or resign, Oct. 20

I am not in any way promoting any change in our current voting system but I am certainly expressing dismay at how readily the Star’s Bob Hepburn dismisses the very idea of reform; in this case, ranked ballots.

To suggest that such a system is too complicated is an insult to the intelligence of Canadians; amongst the world’s best-educated citizens.

An informed electorate is the very foundation of a healthy democracy. It is time for both journalists and political leaders to put much more focus on building our awareness about evolving ideas, rather than making sweeping condemnations of them in a few caustic sentences.
