Investing in LTC wrong approach

Budget eyes emotional care, Jan. 14

So Toronto thinks investing millions in “emotion-centred” care for residents in long-termcare facilities is a good idea? It’s a terrible idea.

Why the continued emphasis on trying to improve institutions when other progressive jurisdictions have abandoned this process and funded inhome and community care instead?

The Toronto Star would do everyone a great service if it focused on why home care is so poorly funded and institutions so richly funded when seniors have said they don’t want to be warehoused.

Kimberly McKinnon, Brighton, Ont.

I was dumbfounded to read Toronto will be spending millions on “emotion-centred” care.

As someone who worked with people with disabilities for decades, the thought that you have to teach kindness and caring is completely abhorrent.

The real problem is segregating people in institutions and excluding them from their communities. But reporters and politicians appear to be turning a blind eye and ear.

How about actually listening to the people in those beds saying over and over again: “I want to go home.”
