Tips for giving your child medication safely

Place all medications in a locked box and put them in a place out of your child’s reach. Keep all medication in its original child-resistant packaging.

Store the medication as directed: for example, at room temperature or in the fridge.

If you receive a bottle of pills a different colour, shape or size than you were expecting, ask to be sure it is the correct medication.

Give your child the medicines exactly as the doctor or pharmacist advises, for example with meals or on an empty stomach. Some medicines are designed to be given at a specific time of day, others when only when your child has symptoms.

If you’re not sure of the amounts or combinations, ask your physician or pharmacist.

You should also ask what to do if you miss a dose.

Your health care practitioner or pharmacist should tell you what to look out for and how to manage any side effects, but if you have questions, ask.

Always keep a list of all the medicines your child is taking, including prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs and herbal supplements (some of which may interact with your child’s medications).

See a health-care provider if your child has an unexpected reaction to a medicine.
