Premier Ford can’t shrug off climate change

Act on climate, Ford warned, Sept. 22

Science writers tell us that the zone within about 1,000 miles either side of the equator will become uninhabitable for man and beast. The Northern Hemisphere is where those people will migrate. I am not so sure that climate migration has not already started, given the migration in the Mediterranean and the Mexico-U.S. border where two million have crossed so far this year.

These writers predict the failure of governments and the collapse of social and health-care systems as it becomes unmanageable. The UN has stated that weather disasters are costing $200 million a day and have increased five fold over the past 50 years.

The Ford government says we only contribute 0.3 per cent of the problem and others need to do the lifting. That attitude is part of the problem — they should be setting examples, rather than making excuses. Brian Mellor, Midland, Ont.
