Some grocery bargains are no help to the poor

Groceries eating up household budgets, Sept. 21

In response to this and other articles about the cost of food, I’d like to draw attention to a pricing strategy in use in Metro and No Frills and perhaps other grocery stores as well. A special price is allowed only if the shopper buys two or more of the item. For instance, at No Frills, Kellogg’s All Bran is four dollars a box, if you buy two or more boxes. If you buy just one, you’ll pay $4.99 for it. Similar pricing applied to bagels and yogurt, to name just two more.

This practice clearly discriminates against the shopper with limited funds. Someone who can’t afford to sink eight dollars into breakfast food, who needs the other four dollars to buy milk. I believe this practise should be prohibited. The special price should be available to everyone. Isobel Raven, Toronto
