Dundas Street renaming isn’t worth the cost

I was born and raised in Toronto and have worked here all my life, and I am disgusted with this campaign to change the name of Dundas Street. I know what Henry Dundas did 220 years ago was wrong but not against the law at the time, and if we go ahead with this folly it is going to cost Toronto taxpayers millions of dollars which would be better spent looking after Toronto’s homeless.

There are many other street and place names of those who came before us who were sinners. Jarvis Street for example was named after a murderer, William Jarvis, who challenged a man to a duel and shot and killed him. Joseph Brant was a slave owner, and there is a town, a highway and a hospital named after him, and countless other streets in Ontario are linked to his name. The cost would be astronomical to change all of this.

In my years as a firefighter I saw a lot suffering and pain, and it makes me sick to think that these tax dollars are going to be used to change street names instead of helping those who cannot help themselves. Let’s move forward. Brian Gill, Toronto
