Aviation should rank high among carbon concerns

Kindly focus on the real environmental problems. Here’s just one of them.

This week, ministers from 193 nations will attend the triennial assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization in Montreal to try to negotiate an industry-wide target for cutting aviation emissions in line with the goals of the Paris climate agreement.

The aviation industry currently produces around one billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year — comparable to the emissions of Japan, the world’s third-largest economy — rising to 1.7 billion tonnes/year by 2035. In comparison, Canada’s oilsands emissions are 0.08 billion tonnes per year. Mike Priaro, Calgary
