Society must play role to ensure safety in schools

Parents call on TDSB to stem violence, Dec. 7

While it is laudable that the TDSB’s bureaucracy is developing a plan for the improvement of school safety, it seems selfevident that there will be little change if they continue to address this issue alone.

Until there is a co-operative and co-ordinated effort between parent groups, the City of Toronto, the provincial government, the school board and the police … until we address the underlying causes of youth violence, including poverty, mental ill-health and systemic racism, the school board’s plan can’t help be but whistling in the wind.
