Flying ice puts truck driver in hospital

IVY MAK

A truck driver is in hospital after flying ice from another vehicle smashed his windshield on Highway 401, according to Ontario Provincial Police.

Video posted by the OPP shows the severity of the damage from the flying ice, as the force seemed to shatter the windshield on the driver’s side of the vehicle, as the glass is visible protruding inside the truck.

In a tweet Friday, the OPP Highway Safety Division reported that the ice had in fact flown off another transport truck.

The incident happened near Courtice Road.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the driver suffered “cuts and scrapes” along with other non-life-threatening injuries.

Schmidt said police have not identified the other truck, and is unaware of any dash cam footage from the transport truck that was struck.

The merge lane from Highway 418 remains blocked.

As is always the case after a snowfall, drivers are reminded to clear snow and ice off their vehicles before driving.

The ice flew off a transport truck into another truck’s windshield.
