A transit system we should strive for

TTC may be as good as public transit gets, Jan. 21

The TTC is one of the best transit systems in North America. But that doesn’t mean that we should compare ourselves to worse transit systems in the U.S. to make ourselves feel better.

The TTC has a tonne of problems and we are far behind from the best transit systems in the world.

It is important to compare ourselves to better systems and strive to do better rather than being satisfied over our superiority over bad transit systems. Haadhi Faizal, Ajax

Perhaps you could write an article and compare the Toronto Transit Commission to the transit system in the Netherlands.

I visited this year twice and thought it phenomenal. WiFi and on-screen stop announcements on every bus, a fare card that works across the entire system, on-time performance, separate bus lanes, right of ways and traffic lights and smooth connections between different operators.

So good that it was cheaper and faster to take transit to the airport than to take a car, even though the car journey was on freeways and the bus necessitated a change of buses.

Perhaps we could hold up such a system as something to strive for rather than comparing the TTC to systems we know are hopelessly inadequate. Marien (Tom) Gehrels, Scarborough
