Catch students only cheating themselves

Are AI written papers cheating? Jan. 22

As a teacher who had to contend with online exams where a complicated answer gets posted on a site like course hero while the exam is been written, and still has caught cheaters who cut and pasted, I have some suggestions for dealing with the new AI technology that can write an essay.

Bring the students in class for paper-based or tightly controlled computer access for evaluations. Allow them to submit labs or essays out of class while being aware that what you are seeing may or may not be the actual work done by the student.

The honest ones will develop skills while doing this and the dishonest ones will be cheating themselves, but not the reputation of the school that is not assigning a B to a Dstudent. Russell Pangborn, Keswick
