Shafting seniors on eye care will cost us eventually

Taxpayers fund OHIP — it’s not free, letter, March 28

The letter writer is right: all taxpayers, including seniors, pay into our public insurance plan, which reimburses care providers on our behalf.

The province is eroding necessary preventive eye care that mitigates deterioration, arguing it is focusing services on those in highest need (i.e., have an “eligible medical condition”). The only purpose of the decision is to transfer the cost from OHIP to individuals.

Unfortunately, there are too many older adults who lack the personal resources to replace this necessary preventive service; they will wait until their eyesight is significantly worse before seeking care.

In the end, it will cost all taxpayers more.
